Why kenyans (Africans) don’t like local TV programmes.

Media industry for a long time is stagnant in Kenya. Media owners put various effort which bears no fruit. We can’t make excuses. Some claim that we were colonised late in the 60s. That alone isn’t sufficient. Talking of which we were together economically with a country like Brazil. Trust me, Brazilian telenovelas are popular than our own programmes in the very country we are in. I took a research on my 100 friends. I asked them why they enjoy foreign content and you’ll be surprised by the truthful reasons they gave. These are some of the reasons why we kenyans don’t enjoy our local contents.

To be honest, this is true. Rarely do content producers in Kenya express creativity. Infact most of the programmes in our national television are copy cut of programmes abroad, mostly from the United states. Those successful shows show some originality. A good example is the Churchill show. (check it out on YouTube)and the rising genre of comedy like the bull’s eye and others. Any upcoming show producer: consider what’s is done by Churchill.
2.quality and abundance.
The quality of the shows being aired in our Tvs are pathetic. Between, there’s no variety. I have never watched a sci-fi clip on any programme. The so called romance isn’t really nothing other than wordings. Video quality is no better than a phone camera. Only a few air 1080p and above quality videos. After watching a series by Fox or China films, you won’t again waste your time on our screens.
I’m talking about interest in your doing not faking. That’s the core reason why Johnny Depp will never be compared with our local actors. They go through acting schools so they know what it entails to act. Passion isn’t in our programmes alone but also in music. When you watch foreign films, you experience and feel as the actors are contrary to our own where you can easily tell that this is acting. In Kenya if a character die you don’t feel the pain but tell me how you felt when the prison break’s Michael Scofield died and Elizabeth of The blacklist. Good content alone isn’t enough without good actors. Don’t choose an actor because you know him /her but because she’s capable. Rarely do we watch videos and clips on YouTube except for a few who are blessed with WiFi in their homes. This is the number one way of promoting content. Watch, comment, share.
4.Theme variances.
A good programme must show variations in themes a thing absent in our shows. There has to be variations from love, hatred, romance to conflicts, break ups and so on. Many don’t always ask why game of thrones always rates higher. This is because of variations in themes and not just that, there has to be uniformity. House of Cards is also another fantastic show in theme variation.
For a successful programme the writer, the actor and the producer have to be exposed I.e have adequate knowledge for its development. If it is romance, we want to see romance. If it’s hacking, we don’t want to see any conflicting ideas with what happens in reality. Kenyans won’t watch our local romance show like pendo and concentrate on Brazilian telenovela because of the love element portrayed on it.

A few african countries have considered this elements and are making progress. Kenya should embrace the same. A country like Nigeria has worked on almost all element and their accent has made its application in Hollywood films.

Iโ€™ll have to try a Kenyan tv show if I get the chance. I donโ€™t think I have ever seen one.

Hello, I had the good fortune to travel to Kenya a few years ago and go on a safari. It was a wonderful experience. I did not watch any television while I was there, but I must say that not all American television is good. In fact much of it is overdone and unrealistic. I especially donโ€™t like Fox (for many reasons). Here in Canada we have some good programs and I find that I prefer British shows to American.
